Mesa took the best care of both of my elderly parents. I can remember how my dad's face would light up when he saw her. She made sure my mom had nutritious meals. Mostly, I have peace of mind that they were being taken care of in their own home, in a safe atmosphere. I was able to fulfill my responsibilities to my job and my family, as well as help my folks with groceries, laundry, and visits, knowing that their caregiver was taking care of major needs and covering overnight hours as well. I recently had a medical crisis of my own and I called Mesa for help. She came to help me out when I came home from the hospital; she took me to doctor's appointments, shopped with me, did light cleaning, as well as changing linens, folding laundry, etc., until I regained my strength. Our Angel from Above. Somewhere around 2010, our elderly parents gave up their winter home and came back to live in Michigan year-round. Their health declined as they aged, and it became a full-time task for my sibling and I to tend to their medical and personal needs. After many falls and declining ability, we persuaded them to move into an assisted living apartment. They were still self-sufficient, but their physical decline limited them, so this was a good solution at the time. We had a good team to fill in as needed, but generally, they were independent. In 2013, our 96-year-old father took a fall that caused some blood to pool on his brain. He had a procedure to drain the blood away from his speech center and was placed in a medical rehab facility until he could return home. We were extremely stressed trying to run between their home and the facility, caring for both of them. It was exhausting. This is when the universe sent us Mesa, our Angel from above. That was the moment that we could all take a breath. Mesa bonded with our dad the moment they met. He challenged her, and she stepped up. She gained his trust, and we were able to get much-needed sleep and peace of mind. Soon after, Avellah joined our care team and, along with Mesa, cared for our dad—both parents, actually—for four years until, at the fabulous age of 100 1/2 years old in June of 2017, he left us peacefully, surrounded by love. Now we were faced with our mother and her grief, facing life without our dad for the first time since she was 16 years old. Mesa and Avellah stepped right in and continued to care for our mother for the next 18 months until her departure in January 2019. As our mother struggled to face life and her will to go on, she was depressed, slept most of her days, and lost her appetite. Mesa cooked homemade meals for her. These smells brought such nourishment and comfort. These ladies made life as comfortable as possible for our mother and us. Mesa, Avellah, and the rest of our care team made life the best it could be in these circumstances. I and my family cannot be more grateful for all of them. They became part of our family through the journey, and they are still here, sharing life’s journey with us today and always. What they gave us, and continue to give us, is priceless.
